Easter in London has arrived; the mornings are lighter, the parks start filling with people (and animals) again and the sound of birds becomes a daily backdrop to our lives.

All across London, gardens are coming back to life, birds are begging to find their nests and London city’s green spaces are filled with activity.

But, there are two sides to the spring wildlife across London. Some birds are a welcome sight, whilst others quickly become a problem for London homes, London businesses and buildings all across the city.

It is important to understand the difference between the bird populations we want to grow and protect, vs. the ones that cause too much damage, to both our buildings and our wildlife.

Some birds are almost universally welcomed in gardens and parks across London. Such as the Blue Tit, the European Robin and the Common Blackbird. These birds are all familiar signs that spring has arrived. Their songs become much more noticeable from March onwards as nesting season begins.

According to guidance from the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB), the main bird nesting season in the UK runs roughly from March through to late summer. This is when birds build nests and raise their young.

London homeowners actively encourage these smaller birds by installing feeders or nest boxes. These species also provide natural benefits, helping control insect populations and contributing to biodiversity.

In areas close to large green spaces such as Hampstead Heath, Regent’s Park or Richmond Park, these garden birds are a regular part of everyday life.

Some bird species adapt to city life exceptionally. They thrive so well in urban environments that they create problems for buildings and the people living in them.

If there is one bird that defines urban wildlife in London, it is the Feral Pigeon.

Unlike smaller garden birds that tend to nest in trees or hedges, pigeons often choose buildings instead. The RSPCA explains that pigeons in cities, like London, nest across roof spaces, loft spaces, chimneys, solar panels, ledges and gutters all provide ideal nesting sites and are mostly unwanted.

Once pigeons establish themselves in these areas, problems quickly follow. Their nesting materials often block drainage systems, pigeon droppings build up on brickwork and walkways, and pigeon parasites such as bird mites can spread into nearby living spaces.

Pigeons are not just a problem for spring as they can breed throughout the year, rather than just during the normal spring breeding period. This then leads to a threat for smaller wildlife encouraging birds, as they compete for nesting areas around buildings and urban structures.

Protecting wildlife while managing pest birds

It is important to remember that wild birds in the UK are protected under wildlife legislation, particularly during nesting season, this includes Pigeons. The UK law makes it illegal to damage or destroy an active bird nest, which is why prevention is key.

You can read more about this protection here: Crimes against wild birds

For us here at Mercury Pest Control, this means our focus is on prevention rather than removal. Implementing measures such as;

  • Pigeon spiking
  • Netting
  • Post wiring systems
  • Solar panel proofing

The presence of birds across London is part of what makes spring so lovely. The key here is learning how to protect the birds that belong in our gardens. That help wildlife thrive, while managing the Pigeon species that have adapted a little too well to city life.
