An Edwardian property in Balham reported a persistent bed bug infestation which required multi-flat inspections, heavy-duty disposal of infested furniture and specific insecticide treatment. All successfully completed, putting a stop to the repeated infestation, by Mercury Pest Control.

Mercury Pest Control were called out to complete a pest control survey for bed bugs at a residential flat in Balham, South West London. Upon arrival at the property, we located spotting and adult bed bugs on the bed frame in the one-bedroom flat.

The tenants had reported having sporadic bites over the course of the last few months. Interestingly, they mentioned that they had not been travelling recently, hadn’t stayed at any other properties, nor had anyone stayed with them.

As these are all the common causes of a spreading bed bug infestation, this was slightly unusual. People will tend to pick them up staying in hotels, Airbnbs, or other places with high traffic, then transfer them back home. They are also easily transmitted via clothing and luggage when guests stay over.

Bed bugs will actually follow the carbon monoxide the host expels at night, making their way directly to the bed. And finding their new home to settle into.

Because there was no obvious travel history, we knew we had to investigate a bit deeper.

Uncovering a hidden, high pressure infestation in a converted London home

After an initial bed bug treatment, we began to raise suspicion after activity remained persistent and sporadic, even after the third insecticide treatment we conducted. This is highly unusual for a typical bed bug treatment for a low-level infestation in a one-bedroom flat in London. This type of insecticide treatment removes this size of infestation, without having to repeat the procedure.

We knew this flat wasn’t the source of the infestation and so the bed bugs must be coming from somewhere else, inside the property. On rare occasions, and in high infestations, activity can spread from connecting properties, especially those connected like flats. Unfortunately we only managed to speak to three out of the four remaining flats in the converted Edwardian London home.

We reported back our concerns to the property management team in Balham who helped us to gain access to the upstairs flat. From speaking to the occupant, it was immediately apparent there was a high infestation in the property. The occupant reported attempting to control the problem with DIY products, but was unable to handle the infestation, which then progressed and worsened over time.

Bed bugs are a very persistent insect, and they will spread considerably if left untreated.

By speaking with a close family member, together, we created a supportive plan of action for how we were going to control this high infestation of bed bugs.

Phase 1: Safe furniture dismantling and preventing cross-contamination

Due to the severe level of the infestation, the mattress, bed frame, sofa, and other items of furniture were beyond saving and had to be discarded. This was a tricky process due to the property being situated on the very top floor of the building.

To do this safely without spreading the problem to the rest of the building as we first treated all the infeseted ibrought down the furniture, we carried out an initial insecticide treatment of the infested items. We did this by dismantling them all and wrapping them securely in heavy duty, self-adhesive carpet protectors.

We find this technique works incredibly well, as any live bed bugs will stick to the adhesive plastic, vastly lowering the risk of cross-contamination in the hallways.

With the main sources of the problem wrapped and ready, we then treated all connecting flats and the communal areas in conjunction with removing the bed bug infested items. This way, we could dramatically reduce the chances of bed bugs infesting other areas of the block and connected flats during the move.

Phase 2: Floorboard treatments and identifying the spread

Follow-up treatments were conducted, alongside regular surveys to assess activity levels and progress. This went hand-in-hand with the resident washing all clothing and bedding at high temperatures frequently.

During our deep inspection of the upper flat, we noticed the carpet was in very poor condition and was coming away from the carpet runners. This was a critical find. The gap allowed the bed bugs to easily spread under the floorboards and travel straight down into the ceiling of the property below, explaining the random intrusions and persistent infestation we had previously noted down there.

Due to the condition of the carpet and the fact that it was heavily compromised, it was also removed from the site and disposed of using the exact same wrapping process as the other infested items.

Final Phase: Total eradication and long-term relief

One more follow-up bed bug treatment was carried out to ensure any remaining eggs or activity were completely neutralized. We then conducted a courtesy survey 2–3 weeks later to inspect for any fresh activity, which thankfully, there was none.

The resident has since reported no fresh signs or evidence of bites, and the connected flats in the block are completely clear too. It was a complex case that required a bit of detective work, but it resulted in a very relieved set of tenants and neighbors.

Preventing Balham bed bug infestations in residential blocks

Bed bugs are incredibly resilient pests. As this case shows, trying to tackle a large infestation with DIY products often just delays proper treatment, giving the insects time to migrate through floorboards, electrical conduits, and wall cavities into neighboring homes. Early intervention is absolutely vital to keep treatments localized and protect your property.
