Bird’s-Eye View: Surrey NHS Health Centre Pigeon Proofing Case Study
Surrey Bird Proofing | Surrey Pigeon Prevention | Commercial bird control Surrey

Pigeon-related infestation at a NHS Surrey healthcare facility requiring drone surveys, hazardous guano clearance, and professional spiking installation, resolved by Mercury Pest Control.
Mercury Pest Control were called to complete a pigeon survey at a NHS healthcare facility in Surrey. Upon arrival, Mercury Pest Control immediately understood the scale of the bird problem in question. High levels of pigeon activity were present with birds nesting and roosting on the roof parapets and under the solar panels.
The problem deepened when staff onsite reported hearing movement of birds in the wall cavities. Which of course raised significant concern for the healthcare environment.
Due to the nature of the location – a high-traffic NHS facility – planning and execution were key as there was no margin for error. Here at Mercury Pest Control we pride ourselves on minimum disruption to businesses day-to-day activities. This meant we had to conduct all bird proofing processes out of hours.
Using Drone Surveys for Commercial Bird Control
To map out the best way to resolve the pigeon infestation in Surrey, we first had to understand the extent of the issue. We deployed a high definition drone which enabled us to get a clear visual on the pigeon infestation and a map of the roof and the nest locations.
To get a more intrusive, close-up look, our team used MEWP (mobile elevated platforms) to gain access to the roof space. After closer inspection, it was clear the pigeons had breached the building fabrication via the soffits and box guttering. Recent severe weather conditions had completely removed the previously installed protection guards.
As a result, large quantities of pigeon guano (hazardous waste) and signs of well established pigeon nests were identified in the box guttering, under windowsills and apex of the roof.
Phase 1: Hazardous guano removal and biocide treatment
Dealing with bird droppings is not just about aesthetics, it’s actually a serious health hazard. Before we could think about proofing to prevent the birds from continuing to choose to nest in this area, we first had to make it safe for both Mercury Pest Control staff and the staff and patients of the health centre.
As the heath centre backed onto a residential area, and the work had to be completed out of hours and over the weekend, there was even more risk. It was very possible that children could be playing nearby, meaning, health and safety was (as always) our top priority.

We erected strict exclusion zones and placed barriers around the area to prevent any access. We protected the building’s perimeter with heavy dust sheets to catch any falling debris or guano.
Operating from our cherry pickers, we began by applying a specialist biocide to break down the pigeon guano pathogens. This is a very important step as it makes it much safer to clean. This is because pigeon guano is highly hazardous to human health when anyone disturbs it.
Once the biocide completed its role, we carefully removed all the substantial guano in the box guttering, which was also causing the surface water gullies to overflow.
We cleaned all the remaining pigeon guano using high pressure jetting on the solar panels, roof space and windows around the Surrey building. We navigated and incredibly tight access point down the side of the building by using a spider cherry picker, and a boom cherry picker for the front and rear of the building.
With the hazardous waste removed, and with the building much cleaner, we moved onto pigeon proofing.
Phase 2: Solar Panel Bird Protection and Perimeter Spiking

Pigeons find solar panels desirable for nesting due the shelter, warmth and height of the units, allowing them to watch out for potential predators.
Using MEWPS we installed solar panel spikes along the entire array to permanently block the birds access.
We then installed commercial grade bird spiking across all key areas of the building, including windowsills and the roof parapet. To ensure survival through British weather conditions, these were secured with self-tapping screws and washers.
Our team conducted the pigeon proofing for this NHS building in Surrey with the utmost care. Because the tight access restriction on the side and the rear of the building led directly onto a residential road, we coordinated a temporary road closure. This guaranteed the safety of passing neighbours.
Once the spiking was complete, we then assessed every single inch of the roof, solar panels and building to ensure no area had been missed in the process.
Once we were happy that the job was complete, we cleaned and tidied the site and provided the client with a detailed completion report.
Final Phase: Monitoring to prevent future bird infestations

In our industry, a heavy well established pigeon or bird infestation like this one is called a “high pressure environment”. This term is used to determine the level of bird activity onsite and to help prepare for what we may encounter next – bird displacement.
When birds can no longer access their usual nesting spots, they don’t just disappear, they tend to hang around. In this case, birds continued to ‘flock’ back, trying to find their previous home. It can be a confusing period but this slowly dies down. As long as they can no longer access their previous nesting areas.
We monitored and saw a rapid decline in their return over a 2-3 week period. Our bird proofing efforts were holding strong. After regular monitoring over a 3 month period, we saw the birds return coming to a complete stop.
Our final follow up survey was conducted 6 months later and we reported no signs of bird activity. All proofing measures remained intact, resulting in a very happy client, and successful bird proofing completion.
Case Study Summary
- Drone survey diagnostics: Utilised high-tech drone footage to map out inaccessible roof nesting sites safely
- Biocide cleaning: Applied professional biocide to neutralise dangerous, dry pathogens before removing heavy guano.
- Gutter clearance: Cleared severely blocked box gutters, resolving overflowing surface water gullies.
- Solar panel protection: Installed specialised solar panel spiking to prevent nesting pigeons.
- Secure perimeter spiking: Fixed premium bird spikes to parapets and windowsills using weather-resistant self-tapping screws and washers.
- Zero-disruption planning: Conducted all high-reach MEWP works over a weekend with temporary road closures to protect the public and ensure NHS operational continuity.
- Long-term monitoring: Provided an ongoing 6-month monitoring framework to successfully track and manage bird displacement until the site was completely clear.
Preventing bird infestations on commercial property
Commercial bird problems can escalate rapidly. They can damage building fabrications, blocking drainage, and creating serious biohazards which can cause harm to human life.
If you notice birds starting to frequent your roof space, early intervention is key to prevent serious issues. Weather damage to soffits and guards should be repaired immediately before birds can spot openings in your wall cavities.
If you are experiencing:
- A pigeon infestation in Surrey
- Nesting birds under solar panels in Croydon
- Heavy bird guano accumulation in South London
- Nuisance wildlife issues on commercial or NHS property
Professional bird control and high-reach drone inspections completed by Mercury Pest Control, is essential.
