An Edwardian property in Balham reported a persistent bed bug infestation which required multi-flat inspections, heavy-duty disposal of infested furniture and specific insecticide treatment. All successfully completed, putting a stop to the repeated infestation, by Mercury Pest Control.

Mercury Pest Control were called out to complete a pest control survey for bed bugs at a residential flat in Balham, South West London. Upon arrival at the property, we located spotting and adult bed bugs on the bed frame in the one-bedroom flat.

The tenants had reported having sporadic bites over the course of the last few months. Interestingly, they mentioned that they had not been travelling recently, hadn’t stayed at any other properties, nor had anyone stayed with them.

As these are all the common causes of a spreading bed bug infestation, this was slightly unusual. People will tend to pick them up staying in hotels, Airbnbs, or other places with high traffic, then transfer them back home. They are also easily transmitted via clothing and luggage when guests stay over.

Bed bugs will actually follow the carbon monoxide the host expels at night, making their way directly to the bed. And finding their new home to settle into.

Because there was no obvious travel history, we knew we had to investigate a bit deeper.

Uncovering a hidden, high pressure infestation in a converted London home

Live bed bugs discovered hiding underneath an office mouse mat in residential home, pest inspection.

After an initial bed bug treatment, we began to raise suspicion after activity remained persistent and sporadic, even after the third insecticide treatment we conducted. This is highly unusual for a typical bed bug treatment for a low-level infestation in a one-bedroom flat in London. This type of insecticide treatment removes this size of infestation, without having to repeat the procedure.

We knew this flat wasn’t the source of the infestation and so the bed bugs must be coming from somewhere else, inside the property. On rare occasions, and in high infestations, activity can spread from connecting properties, especially those connected like flats. Unfortunately we only managed to speak to three out of the four remaining flats in the converted Edwardian London home.

We reported back our concerns to the property management team in Balham who helped us to gain access to the upstairs flat. From speaking to the occupant, it was immediately apparent there was a high infestation in the property. The occupant reported attempting to control the problem with DIY products, but was unable to handle the infestation, which then progressed and worsened over time.

Bed bugs are a very persistent insect, and they will spread considerably if left untreated.

By speaking with a close family member, together, we created a supportive plan of action for how we were going to control this high infestation of bed bugs.

Phase 1: Safe furniture dismantling and preventing cross-contamination

Cluster of adult bed bugs found along the mattress seams during a residential home inspection
Cluster of adult bed bugs found along the mattress seams during a residential home inspection

Due to the severe level of the infestation, the mattress, bed frame, sofa, and other items of furniture were beyond saving and had to be discarded. This was a tricky process due to the property being situated on the very top floor of the building.

To do this safely without spreading the problem to the rest of the building as we first treated all the infeseted ibrought down the furniture, we carried out an initial insecticide treatment of the infested items. We did this by dismantling them all and wrapping them securely in heavy duty, self-adhesive carpet protectors.

We find this technique works incredibly well, as any live bed bugs will stick to the adhesive plastic, vastly lowering the risk of cross-contamination in the hallways.

With the main sources of the problem wrapped and ready, we then treated all connecting flats and the communal areas in conjunction with removing the bed bug infested items. This way, we could dramatically reduce the chances of bed bugs infesting other areas of the block and connected flats during the move.

Phase 2: Floorboard treatments and identifying the spread

Fecal spotting and bed bug stains uncovered on a wooden bed frame during removal.
Fecal spotting and bed bug stains uncovered on a wooden bed frame during removal.

Follow-up treatments were conducted, alongside regular surveys to assess activity levels and progress. This went hand-in-hand with the resident washing all clothing and bedding at high temperatures frequently.

During our deep inspection of the upper flat, we noticed the carpet was in very poor condition and was coming away from the carpet runners. This was a critical find. The gap allowed the bed bugs to easily spread under the floorboards and travel straight down into the ceiling of the property below, explaining the random intrusions and persistent infestation we had previously noted down there.

Due to the condition of the carpet and the fact that it was heavily compromised, it was also removed from the site and disposed of using the exact same wrapping process as the other infested items.

Final Phase: Total eradication and long-term relief

One more follow-up bed bug treatment was carried out to ensure any remaining eggs or activity were completely neutralized. We then conducted a courtesy survey 2–3 weeks later to inspect for any fresh activity, which thankfully, there was none.

The resident has since reported no fresh signs or evidence of bites, and the connected flats in the block are completely clear too. It was a complex case that required a bit of detective work, but it resulted in a very relieved set of tenants and neighbors.

Balham bed bug infestation case study summary

  • Initial diagnostics: Identified adult bed bugs and spotting on a bed frame, noting unusual activity with no travel history.
  • Building-wide investigation: Liaised with property management team to inspect adjoining flats, locating a severe, hidden infestation upstairs.
  • Cross-contamination control: Treated, dismantled, and wrapped all infested furniture in heavy-duty adhesive film to protect communal areas during removal.
  • Structural entry treatment: Identified loose carpeting allowing bed bugs to migrate under floorboards, pulling up and safely disposing of the carpet.
  • Multi-zone insecticide application: Treated the primary flat, communal hallways, and all connecting flats simultaneously to halt the spread.
  • Follow-up monitoring: Conducted a final courtesy inspection 3 weeks post-treatment, confirming 100% eradication across all flats.

Preventing Balham bed bug infestations in residential blocks

Bed bugs are incredibly resilient pests. As this case shows, trying to tackle a large infestation with DIY products often just delays proper treatment, giving the insects time to migrate through floorboards, electrical conduits, and wall cavities into neighboring homes. Early intervention is absolutely vital to keep treatments localized and protect your property.

If you are experiencing:

  • A persistent bed bug infestation in Balham
  • Unexplained insect bites in South West London
  • Signs of bed bug spotting on mattresses or skirting boards in Clapham or Tooting
  • Spreading pest issues in a converted block of flats

Professional bed bug heat and insecticide treatments completed by Mercury Pest Control are essential.

Banstead, Surrey offers a beautiful range of green spaces and woodland areas. As one of the first towns you encounter when leaving London and entering Surrey, it sits beautifully on the border where the city meets the countryside.

Residents and visitors enjoy walking through the local woodlands, which famously inspired the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, and shopping on the quaint high street. It is a lovely place to live and work, but with it’s unique blend of countryside and community, it means pest problems are never far away.

With spacious family homes, older commercial buildings and extensive natural woodland, Banstead homes the ideal environment for pests. Wildlife and insects naturally move between outdoor spaces into indoor spaces as the seasons change. At Mercury Pest Control, we see a distinct shift in call outs throughout the year. Meaning, local and commercial properties face different threats during the summer compared to those pests who thrive in the winter.

Squirrels and rats around Banstead woodlands

Wooden lantern åsculpture in Banstead Woods
Wooden lantern sculpture at the beginning of a trail through the Banstead woods in Surrey, England

Although living next to the gorgeous woodlands around Banstead and Burgh Heath is a huge perk, it does increase the likelihood of wildlife and pest issues. Grey squirrels are an incredible nuisance in these rural areas, as they often look for warmer, sturdier places to nest. They easily climb structures and drainpipes, giving them access to homes through roof fascias and soffits. They can easily breach weak fascias and gain access to loft spaces, and once they’re inside,  their constant gnawing can severely damage wooden beams, insulation, and electrical wiring.

Rats are another common pest issue for properties situated close to the woodlands and open fields. They constantly look for secure, warm spaces to nest, which often looks like loft spaces and under-floor voids in homes. As a result, their scratching and gnawing cause structural damage to both woodwork and wiring. Their droppings and urine can also build up quickly, creating potential health risks for those living in the property.

Banstead High street businesses face constant rodent pressure

Banstead High Street is home to some beautiful cafés and shops. With the presence of constant local waste and food deliveries, rodents see this as a reliable food source. Rats often travel through underground drainage networks, which means they can easily enter properties, both residential and commercial, unseen, through small structural gaps in the pipework.

Mice on the other hand prefer residential homes and flats. They can fit and squeeze through gaps as small as the width of a pencil. Again, meaning they can enter homes unnoticed by travelling via wall cavities and ceiling voids, once they;re inside unnoticed, the problems can increase.

Most rodents in a property present with these specific signs:

  • Scratching noises in the walls, ceilings, or floorboards.
  • Dark, small droppings found in kitchen cupboards or along skirting boards.

Moths and carpet beetles in Surrey homes

Pest Control, Countryside Home
Pest Control, Countryside Home

Because Banstead features many traditional homes with high-quality furnishings, textile insects are a major local issue. Clothes moths and carpet beetles thrive in Banstead, particularly in quiet, undisturbed areas where natural fibres are densely present. The larvae of these insects feed on high-quality textiles such as wool, silk, leather, and carpets, which causes significant and costly structural damage to your home’s interior.

We see moth and carpet beetle problems build up very slowly. So, they often go completely unnoticed by homeowners until visible damage to soft furnishings has already been done.  At that point, damage to expensive items cannot be fixed. Therefore, identifying thin patches in your carpets or finding small holes in stored clothing early, means you should seek professional assistance immediately, before the problem results in deep damage.

Seasonal shifts: From summer heat to winter cold

Cold winter walks, Banstead Surrey

The warmer summer months are approaching and with the rising heat coms a surge of pest activity across Banstead. The summer warmth means the breakdown of organic waste in bins is quicker, the smell stronger, faster. Which in turn attracts more rodents and insects to local residential and commercial properties.

When the temperature drops later in the year, the opposite happens, the freezing winter weather forces pests to seek warmth indoors. Rats, mice, and squirrels cannot survive harsh UK winters easily. So, they actively target indoor, warm, local homes for shelter to wait out the coder months. They will follow heat currents escaping from homes, such as pipes or vents, which guides them directly toward your kitchen or loft space.

Green space, busy streets, and hidden pest problems

Pest control Clapham Common, London
Pest control Clapham Common, London

Clapham Common is one of south west London’s most popular green spaces. On any given day you’ve got runners, dog walkers, picnics, events, and a constant flow of people moving between the Common and the surrounding high streets, flats, cafés and bars.

It’s a great place to live and work, but like many busy London areas, pest problems are never far beneath the surface.

With a mix of large period properties split into flats, newer developments, basement conversions and busy hospitality venues, Clapham Common creates the perfect environment for pests to live, move and spread without being noticed straight away.

From rodents and squirrels to wasps and moths, we see a bit of everything here throughout the year.

Rodents around Clapham Common

Pest control Clapham Common, London
Pest control Clapham Common, London

Living next to such a large green space has its perks, but it also means increased rodent activity.

Rats thrive in areas like Clapham where there is easy access to food, waste and shelter. The underground drainage network, shared between streets and buildings, allows them to travel freely and enter properties through drains, broken pipework or small structural gaps.

Mice are just as common, especially in flats. They can squeeze through gaps as small as a pencil and will often move between properties through wall cavities, ceiling voids and pipework.

Once inside, they tend to stay hidden. Most people first notice signs like:

  • Scratching in walls or ceilings
  • Droppings in cupboards or along skirting boards
  • Smear marks along edges and surfaces
  • Food packaging that has been chewed

By the time these signs appear, activity has usually been building for a while.

Why Clapham Common properties attract pests

Clapham is a high-footfall area with constant movement, deliveries and waste. That alone creates a reliable food source for pests.

Add in older buildings that have been refurbished multiple times over the years, and you often end up with hidden gaps, unsealed entry points and shared spaces that pests can move through easily.

Basements, bin stores, lofts and service areas all provide warmth and shelter year-round.

And with Clapham Common right on the doorstep, wildlife naturally moves between the park and nearby homes and businesses. Squirrels in particular will often leave the trees and find their way into loft spaces to nest.

Squirrels in lofts across Clapham

Squirrels are a regular call-out in this area, especially in properties close to the Common.

They can access roofs by climbing trees or nearby structures, then gnaw through fascia boards or weak points to get inside. Once in a loft, they will nest, breed and move around frequently, which is why the noise is often the first thing people notice.

They don’t just settle in quietly either. Their constant chewing can cause damage to wood, insulation, wiring and even pipework, which can quickly become a bigger issue if left untreated.

Wasp nests in gardens and roof spaces

Wasps nest in loft space, London

In the warmer months, wasps become much more active around Clapham Common.

Outdoor spaces, gardens and picnic areas naturally attract them, but nests are often built closer to home than people realise.

Common nesting spots include:

  • Roof spaces and lofts
  • Wall cavities
  • Air bricks
  • Garden sheds and fencing
  • Under roof tiles or fascia boards

Wasps can be aggressive when disturbed, and nests can grow quickly over the summer. Professional removal is always the safest option.

Moths in flats and period properties

Severe clothes moth larvae damage on a wool rug in a Clapham home.
Severe clothes moth larvae damage on a wool rug in a Clapham home.

Clapham’s mix of older homes and soft furnishings makes it a hotspot for clothes moths.

They’re drawn to natural fibres like wool, carpets and upholstery, where they lay eggs. Once the larvae hatch, they feed on these materials, which is what causes the damage.

Common signs include small holes in clothing, thinning patches in carpets and moth activity around wardrobes or soft furnishings.

Moth problems can build slowly and often go unnoticed until damage has already been done, which is why early treatment is important.

Pest control for Clapham Common businesses

With so many cafés, restaurants, bars and shops around Clapham Common, pest control isn’t just about dealing with a problem, it’s about preventing one.

Food businesses in particular need to stay on top of pest activity to meet hygiene standards and protect their reputation.

Shared bin areas, deliveries and high customer turnover all increase risk, which is why many local businesses choose ongoing pest management rather than waiting for an issue to appear.

Regular inspections, monitoring and preventative treatments help keep everything compliant and running smoothly.

Pest control in Clapham Common you can rely on

Whether you’re dealing with mice in a flat, rats in the drains, squirrels in the loft or wasps in the garden, pest problems in Clapham Common are very common, but they don’t have to be long-term.

At Mercury Pest Control, we work across SW4 providing fast, effective pest control for both residential and commercial properties.

If you’ve noticed signs of pest activity or want to put preventative measures in place, get in touch with our team today.

Wasps are waking up across London homes this June

June in London is when we really start to feel the shift into warmer weather. The mornings are brighter, windows are opening more often, and we begin to spend more time enjoying our homes and outdoor spaces.

But we are not the only ones waking up to the sunshine.

Across London, wasps are starting to emerge after months of hibernation. For many homeowners, this is the first time they notice them, often finding a slow moving wasp inside their home, usually near a window, loft space or light fitting.

If you’ve already seen one or two wasps this June, you are not alone. This is one of the most common seasonal call outs we receive at Mercury Pest Control.

Why you are seeing Wasps in London, June

In early spring, the wasps you are seeing are not worker wasps. They are queen wasps.

These queens have spent the entire winter hidden away in places such as:

  • Loft spaces
  • Wall cavities
  • Sheds and garages
  • Roof voids and eaves

As temperatures begin to rise across London, including areas such as Clapham, Battersea and Wimbledon, these queen wasps wake up and begin searching for somewhere to build a new nest.

This is why the wasps you are seeing now are often:

  • Larger than usual
  • Slower moving or sluggish
  • Appearing on their own rather than in groups

It often catches people off guard, especially when they appear indoors rather than outside.

Why are they ending up inside?

Wasps nest in loft space, London. Wasps in London June
Wasps nest in loft space, London. Wasps in London June

After months of hibernation, queen wasps are disorientated and looking for light and an exit.

What we often see across London homes is:

  • Wasps moving towards windows and becoming trapped
  • Wasps entering living spaces from lofts or wall cavities
  • Wasps appearing near ceiling lights or upper floors

In many cases, the wasp has simply woken up in the wrong place and cannot find its way back outside.

This is why you may find:

  • A slow moving wasp on the windowsill
  • A wasp flying weakly around a room
  • Or even a dead wasp near a window

Does finding Wasps in London, June, inside mean you have a nest?

Finding a single wasp inside your home in June does not automatically mean you have a nest.

However, this is where it becomes important to pay attention.

Across London properties, especially Victorian terraces and converted flats, we look for patterns rather than one-off sightings.

You may have a developing issue if you notice:

  • Repeated sightings of wasps inside the same room
  • Wasps appearing regularly over several days
  • Activity near loft hatches, vents or light fittings
  • Wasps entering and exiting from the same external point (roofline, air bricks, eaves)

In these cases, it can be an early sign that a queen has chosen your property as a nesting site.

Spot a nest by searching externally for wasps flying around entry points, London homes. Wasps in London June

Wasps nests begin to form in Spring across London

As queen wasps begin building, they look for quiet, sheltered areas.

Common nesting spots across London homes include:

  • Loft spaces
  • Roof voids and eaves
  • Wall cavities
  • Shed roofs and garden structures
  • Air vents and gaps around pipework

In high-density London housing, particularly in areas such as Islington, Southwark, Brixton and Wimbledon, these spaces are often shared or connected between properties.

This means a nest starting in one area can quickly become a wider issue if left unchecked.

Why June is the most important time to act

Many people associate wasps with summer, but June is actually one of the most important times to deal with them. BPCA describes wasps as “One of Britain’s most feared and potentially aggressive pests, wasps are known for their nasty stings and seemingly unprovoked attacks.”

Which is why, prevention is key in earlier months like June, rather than waiting for the infestation to grow later in the year.

At this stage:

  • Nests are small and easier to manage
  • Only the queen is active in the early stages
  • Future worker populations have not yet developed

By July and August, that single queen can produce hundreds, sometimes thousands of worker wasps.

Dealing with the problem early prevents a much larger issue later in the summer.

Spring activity across London homes and flats

In larger London buildings and flats, we often see faster spread of pest activity.

Areas such as:

  • Wandsworth
  • Stratford & Bow
  • Elephant & Castle
  • Camden & Islington

All include:

  • Shared loft spaces
  • Communal service voids
  • Connected roof structures
  • Warm internal environments

For wasps, these are ideal nesting conditions. Once activity begins, it can affect multiple flats or units within the same building.

What to do if you see wasps inside your home

If you see a single wasp, it is usually not a cause for concern.

However, if you are noticing repeated activity, the best approach is to:

  • Avoid blocking entry points without identifying the source
  • Avoid disturbing potential nesting areas such as lofts
  • Monitor where the wasps are appearing from

Attempting to deal with a developing nest without the correct equipment can increase the risk of stings, especially as the colony grows.

Pigeon-related infestation at a NHS Surrey healthcare facility requiring drone surveys, hazardous guano clearance, and professional spiking installation, resolved by Mercury Pest Control.

Mercury Pest Control were called to complete a pigeon survey at a NHS healthcare facility in Surrey. Upon arrival, Mercury Pest Control immediately understood the scale of the bird problem in question. High levels of pigeon activity were present with birds nesting and roosting on the roof parapets and under the solar panels.

The problem deepened when staff onsite reported hearing movement of birds in the wall cavities. Which of course raised significant concern for the healthcare environment.

Due to the nature of the location – a high-traffic NHS facility – planning and execution were key as there was no margin for error. Here at Mercury Pest Control we pride ourselves on minimum disruption to businesses day-to-day activities. This meant we had to conduct all bird proofing processes out of hours.

Using Drone Surveys for Commercial Bird Control

To map out the best way to resolve the pigeon infestation in Surrey, we first had to understand the extent of the issue. We deployed a high definition drone which enabled us to get a clear visual on the pigeon infestation and a map of the roof and the nest locations.

To get a more intrusive, close-up look, our team used MEWP (mobile elevated platforms) to gain access to the roof space. After closer inspection, it was clear the pigeons had breached the building fabrication via the soffits and box guttering. Recent severe weather conditions had completely removed the previously installed protection guards.

As a result, large quantities of pigeon guano (hazardous waste) and signs of well established pigeon nests were identified in the box guttering, under windowsills and apex of the roof.

Phase 1: Hazardous guano removal and biocide treatment

Dealing with bird droppings is not just about aesthetics, it’s actually a serious health hazard. Before we could think about proofing to prevent the birds from continuing to choose to nest in this area, we first had to make it safe for both Mercury Pest Control staff and the staff and patients of the health centre.

As the heath centre backed onto a residential area, and the work had to be completed out of hours and over the weekend, there was even more risk. It was very possible that children could be playing nearby, meaning, health and safety was (as always) our top priority.

Mercury Pest Control completing essential bird proofing on NHS healthcare building
Mercury Pest Control completing essential bird proofing on NHS healthcare building

We erected strict exclusion zones and placed barriers around the area to prevent any access. We protected the building’s perimeter with heavy dust sheets to catch any falling debris or guano.

Operating from our cherry pickers, we began by applying a specialist biocide to break down the pigeon guano pathogens. This is a very important step as it makes it much safer to clean. This is because pigeon guano is highly hazardous to human health when anyone disturbs it.

Once the biocide completed its role, we carefully removed all the substantial guano in the box guttering, which was also causing the surface water gullies to overflow.

We cleaned all the remaining pigeon guano using high pressure jetting on the solar panels, roof space and windows around the Surrey building. We navigated and incredibly tight access point down the side of the building by using a spider cherry picker, and a boom cherry picker for the front and rear of the building.

With the hazardous waste removed, and with the building much cleaner, we moved onto pigeon proofing.

Phase 2: Solar Panel Bird Protection and Perimeter Spiking

Pigeons find solar panels desirable for nesting due the shelter, warmth and height of the units, allowing them to watch out for potential predators.

Using MEWPS we installed solar panel spikes along the entire array to permanently block the birds access.

We then installed commercial grade bird spiking across all key areas of the building, including windowsills and the roof parapet. To ensure survival through British weather conditions, these were secured with self-tapping screws and washers.

Our team conducted the pigeon proofing for this NHS building in Surrey with the utmost care. Because the tight access restriction on the side and the rear of the building led directly onto a residential road, we coordinated a temporary road closure. This guaranteed the safety of passing neighbours.

Once the spiking was complete, we then assessed every single inch of the roof, solar panels and building to ensure no area had been missed in the process.

Once we were happy that the job was complete, we cleaned and tidied the site and provided the client with a detailed completion report.

Final Phase: Monitoring to prevent future bird infestations

In our industry, a heavy well established pigeon or bird infestation like this one is called a “high pressure environment”. This term is used to determine the level of bird activity onsite and to help prepare for what we may encounter next – bird displacement.

When birds can no longer access their usual nesting spots, they don’t just disappear, they tend to hang around. In this case, birds continued to ‘flock’ back, trying to find their previous home. It can be a confusing period but this slowly dies down. As long as they can no longer access their previous nesting areas.

We monitored and saw a rapid decline in their return over a 2-3 week period. Our bird proofing efforts were holding strong. After regular monitoring over a 3 month period, we saw the birds return coming to a complete stop.

Our final follow up survey was conducted 6 months later and we reported no signs of bird activity. All proofing measures remained intact, resulting in a very happy client, and successful bird proofing completion.

Case Study Summary

  • Drone survey diagnostics: Utilised high-tech drone footage to map out inaccessible roof nesting sites safely
  • Biocide cleaning: Applied professional biocide to neutralise dangerous, dry pathogens before removing heavy guano.
  • Gutter clearance: Cleared severely blocked box gutters, resolving overflowing surface water gullies.
  • Solar panel protection: Installed specialised solar panel spiking to prevent nesting pigeons.
  • Secure perimeter spiking: Fixed premium bird spikes to parapets and windowsills using weather-resistant self-tapping screws and washers.
  • Zero-disruption planning: Conducted all high-reach MEWP works over a weekend with temporary road closures to protect the public and ensure NHS operational continuity.
  • Long-term monitoring: Provided an ongoing 6-month monitoring framework to successfully track and manage bird displacement until the site was completely clear.

Preventing bird infestations on commercial property

Commercial bird problems can escalate rapidly. They can damage building fabrications, blocking drainage, and creating serious biohazards which can cause harm to human life.

If you notice birds starting to frequent your roof space, early intervention is key to prevent serious issues. Weather damage to soffits and guards should be repaired immediately before birds can spot openings in your wall cavities.

If you are experiencing:

  • A pigeon infestation in Surrey
  • Nesting birds under solar panels in Croydon
  • Heavy bird guano accumulation in South London
  • Nuisance wildlife issues on commercial or NHS property

Professional bird control and high-reach drone inspections completed by Mercury Pest Control, is essential.

Pest Control in London: What a Suspected Hantavirus Outbreak Reveals About Rodent Risks in London

Aerial front view of a generic cruise ship. Hantavirus may have spread between passengers on cruise ship, WHO says

BBC has reported a rodent-related issue onboard a luxury Atlantic cruise ship in which “Three people have died following a suspected hantavirus outbreak on a cruise ship travelling from Argentina to Cape Verde – and another three people are reported ill.” – BBC report

The virus is believed to be linked to exposure to rodents or rodent-contaminated environments during the voyage or travel route.

While this is a rare and still developing situation, it highlights an important issue that is highly relevant to homes and businesses in London: the real health risks associated with rodent activity.

Why rodent-related health risks can affect any environment

Any environment can be affected. We can see with this latest news story that even cruise ships can be targeted by rodents as rats and mice do not discriminate.

Hotels, commercial properties and other businesses that are usually tightly controlled with strict hygiene procedures can be, and are still, affected. Rodents can gain access through supply chains, waste systems, cargo movements and human traffic. Once present, they can spread easily.

We see this across London properties and business. Whether it is a Victorian terrace in Clapham, a converted flat in Camden or a commercial building in Canary Wharf. Rodents can move through hidden structural routes including wall cavities, pipework, loft spaces and shared bin storage areas. In densely populated areas, this movement between properties can happen without being immediately visible.

How rodent activity becomes a health risk

Common mouse in London home

Rodents such as rats and mice are known carriers of several viruses and pathogens. One of the most serious, which has been reported as active on the Atlantic cruise, is hantavirus. This is typically transmitted through contact with rodent droppings, urine or saliva, or by inhaling contaminated dust particles.

In domestic and commercial environments, risks increase when infestations go unnoticed in hidden or hard-to-reach areas such as lofts, basements, wall voids or storage spaces. Even low-level activity can lead to contamination of surfaces and food preparation areas over time.

Early signs of rodent activity in London properties

Rodent infestations rarely begin with obvious damage. In most cases, they develop gradually and remain hidden until activity increases. Early warning signs often include movement or scratching noises at night, droppings in cupboards or along skirting boards, unusual smells in enclosed areas, or occasional sightings in kitchens, lofts or commercial storage spaces.

In shared buildings, especially flats and commercial units, rodents can travel between different areas using structural gaps and service routes, meaning a localised issue can quickly become a wider problem if left untreated.

Prevention and early intervention are essential

The key takeaway from this outbreak is not panic, but awareness. Rodent activity is not just a nuisance issue, it can carry genuine health risks when left unmanaged.

Routine inspections and proper prevention measures are the most effective way to stop small issues developing into larger infestations. Once rodents are established, they reproduce quickly and expand into surrounding areas.

West Norwood Drain Investigation

Drain-related rat infestation in West Norwood property requiring full drainage investigation, solved by Mercury Pest Control

Rat problem in house London | Residential rat control London | CCTV drain inspection for rats

Sometimes you need to look a little closer!

Mercury Pest Control were called to fix a rat infestation in an Edwardian house, in West Norwood, London. The customer was experiencing a substantial rat problem which had progressed. The issue was mainly with rats in cavity walls and rats underneath the house at the rear. Gnawing Rats scratching, rat smells of ammonia and frequent rodent sounds of movement were being reported and understandably causing concern for the customer.

After detailed inspections and, CCTV drainage inspections it was established that the rats were entering the property through drains. With drain related rat infestations, in this case, excavation work was key. The rodent infestation was identified and repaired, and rat blockers  were installed to prevent further rat infestations in the drains.

Edwardian property in West Norwood with shared drainage system

The case relates to a customer living in an Edwardian property in West Norwood, London. The customer has lived there for 20 years and had never reported seeing a manhole chamber on the property.

Thames Water were contacted and blueprints suggested the drains were shared on the street, but unfortunately no further details of a manhole were present.

This drain-related rat infestation in West Norwood, South London required a full CCTV drain survey and excavation to stop rats entering the property through damaged pipework.

Rats in cavity walls caused by hidden drain defect and no visible entry points

During our initial pest control survey for rats, we found no external points of entry. We did locate a rat gnawed surface water gully cover, which tends to indicate that the rodent problem is drain related. The fact the customer had no rodent sightings in the Edwardian property also points to this. Rat infestations in London usually gather their main sources of food and water via the drainage system, then they use buildings and houses for nesting. Underfloor rat nests, cavity wall rats nests all contribute to this. Rats then start making appearances to gather food, which is when sightings increase across London kitchens and rodents are seen inside London homes.

After a thorough search, no manhole chamber was located for us to carry out a rodent CCTV inspection of the drains. We then used our CCTV inspection process in the downstairs toilet stack. This is good practice when trying to inspect the drainage system with limited access. Unfortunately, we could only survey downstream which led us directly out towards the main sewer line.

After slight frustration, we returned at a later date and, with permission, continued our search from the neighbour’s garden, who had a manhole present. This was grouted in, so we carefully removed the grout to gain access to the drainage system allowing us to carry out another CCTV inspection of the drains to find this rat infestation.

Rats nests can be hard to find, but once Mercury Pest Control know they are there, we exhaust all paths to find them.

Older West Norwood properties with shared drainage systems can be particularly vulnerable to hidden rats in drains and underground rat infestations.

CCTV drain inspection, manhole excavation and rat blocker installation

Continuing through the drainage system downstream, we entered a chamber 18 metres along which appeared to be in the location of the paved side return. This proved to be complex and not ideal, but we have a manhole. We advised our customer on the findings and went away to put a plan together. Complicated rat infestations in London drains like this one, need a detailed excavation plan to ensure the rodent’s nest does not return.

After careful planning, we returned using a  specialist rat nest detection CAT scan, to implement our plan.

We mapped its location, checked for live cables which we isolated and used our drainage camera head with a SONDE transmitter to continue identification. After excavating around 1 foot of ground, we reached the manhole chamber. We took this up and located three drainage connections leading directly to and from the property.

We conducted another pipework drainage CCTV inspection and identified a defect in the drains directly below the foundation wall by the kitchen. The main location where kitchen rat activity and cavity wall rat activity was being reported in the property.

Mercury Pest Control repaired this drain defect and installed rat blockers onto the connections to help prevent any further rat ingress into the property. Mercury Pest Control left access to the manhole so the rat barriers can be serviced appropriately and the customer had access to their drains if ever needed in the future.

A full CCTV drain survey, manhole excavation and professional rat blocker installation were essential to resolving this West Norwood rat problem at its source.

Drain repair and three rat blockers installed to stop rat ingress

  • Drain defect identified beneath the foundation wall causing rat infestation in West Norwood
  • Broken drainage system repaired to stop rats entering the West Norwood property
  • Three rat blockers installed to prevent rats entering through drains in this property
  • Hidden manhole chamber located, exposed and made permanently accessible for future CCTV drain inspections
  • Long-term rat prevention measures implemented to prevent further drain-related rat infestations

Mercury Pest Control resolved a substantial rat infestation through full drainage investigation, excavation and targeted repair, preventing further ingress into the property.

A hidden drain defect caused this rat infestation in West Norwood, which is a common issue in older South London properties with shared drainage systems.

By repairing the defective drain and installing rat blockers, the team delivered a long-term solution that prevented the rat infestation in West Norwood from returning.

Preventing rats in London homes through proper drain inspection and repair

Rat infestations in London can be complex, but with thorough inspections and treatment there is always a solution.

Do not block access to manhole chambers during building works (especially extensions). This will prevent delays in conducting inspections of the drains where issues may arise.

If you’re having a new plumbing system installed, you should cap redundant connections or branches.  Back fill redundant pipes with rubble bags and concrete. Rats and rodents will breach after renovation work, as pipes are used to gain access into your London home. Fully remove the redundant branch or cap it off with nothing less than a stainless steel bung.

If you are experiencing;

  • a rat infestation in West Norwood
  • rats nests in cavities in Streatham
  • rodents in homes in Crystal Palace
  • rats under floorboards in South London

Professional rat control and expert drain inspection is often the only permanent solution.

Easter wildlife in London: Why some birds thrive while others cause problems

Easter in London has arrived; the mornings are lighter, the parks start filling with people (and animals) again and the sound of birds becomes a daily backdrop to our lives.

All across London, gardens are coming back to life, birds are begging to find their nests and London city’s green spaces are filled with activity.

But, there are two sides to the spring wildlife across London. Some birds are a welcome sight, whilst others quickly become a problem for London homes, London businesses and buildings all across the city.

It is important to understand the difference between the bird populations we want to grow and protect, vs. the ones that cause too much damage, to both our buildings and our wildlife.

Bird populations we welcome across London

Pest control service Peckham
Pest control service Peckham

Some birds are almost universally welcomed in gardens and parks across London. Such as the Blue Tit, the European Robin and the Common Blackbird. These birds are all familiar signs that spring has arrived. Their songs become much more noticeable from March onwards as nesting season begins.

According to guidance from the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB), the main bird nesting season in the UK runs roughly from March through to late summer. This is when birds build nests and raise their young.

You can read more about how birds nest and how to help them here: Birds Nests and Nestboxes

London homeowners actively encourage these smaller birds by installing feeders or nest boxes. These species also provide natural benefits, helping control insect populations and contributing to biodiversity.

In areas close to large green spaces such as Hampstead Heath, Regent’s Park or Richmond Park, these garden birds are a regular part of everyday life.

When birds become pests across London

Pest control Streatham
Pest control Streatham

Some bird species adapt to city life exceptionally. They thrive so well in urban environments that they create problems for buildings and the people living in them.

If there is one bird that defines urban wildlife in London, it is the Feral Pigeon.

Unlike smaller garden birds that tend to nest in trees or hedges, pigeons often choose buildings instead. The RSPCA explains that pigeons in cities, like London, nest across roof spaces, loft spaces, chimneys, solar panels, ledges and gutters all provide ideal nesting sites and are mostly unwanted.

Once pigeons establish themselves in these areas, problems quickly follow. Their nesting materials often block drainage systems, pigeon droppings build up on brickwork and walkways, and pigeon parasites such as bird mites can spread into nearby living spaces.

Pigeons are not just a problem for spring as they can breed throughout the year, rather than just during the normal spring breeding period. This then leads to a threat for smaller wildlife encouraging birds, as they compete for nesting areas around buildings and urban structures.

Protecting wildlife while managing pest birds

It is important to remember that wild birds in the UK are protected under wildlife legislation, particularly during nesting season, this includes Pigeons. The UK law makes it illegal to damage or destroy an active bird nest, which is why prevention is key.

You can read more about this protection here: Crimes against wild birds

For us here at Mercury Pest Control, this means our focus is on prevention rather than removal. Implementing measures such as;

  • Pigeon spiking
  • Netting
  • Post wiring systems
  • Solar panel proofing

The presence of birds across London is part of what makes spring so lovely. The key here is learning how to protect the birds that belong in our gardens. That help wildlife thrive, while managing the Pigeon species that have adapted a little too well to city life.

village streets and hidden pest problems

Hampstead and Belsize Park are some of North London’s most desirable areas. Leafy streets, period homes, green spaces and a village-like feel make them attractive places to live. With Hampstead Heath nearby and plenty of gardens, ponds and wildlife, it’s easy to forget that pests thrive in exactly these kinds of environments.

On the surface, everything looks calm and well kept, but behind the beautiful houses and converted townhouses, pest activity is far more common than most residents expect in Hampstead & Belsize Park.

Most of our work in Hampstead and Belsize Park focuses on mice, rats and fabric pests, with an increasing number of clients opting for ongoing pest management rather than one-off treatments.

Rodents in Hampstead & Belsize Park are more common than people think

Mice are the most frequent call-outs we receive in Hampstead and Belsize Park. Suburban houses, extensions, basements and loft conversions create ideal conditions for mice to move unnoticed through walls, pipework and roof spaces.

Many properties in the area are older buildings that have been renovated multiple times over the years. While these upgrades improve living space, they often leave hidden gaps, voids and structural changes that rodents use as access routes.

Rats tend to be more closely linked to gardens, drains and outdoor areas. With so much green space and mature trees around Hampstead, rats have plenty of shelter and food sources. Once they establish themselves outdoors, it’s only a matter of time before they explore nearby buildings.

Shared drainage systems between neighbouring properties also mean that a rat problem rarely stays contained to one house, especially with common building works and renovations happening to the older homes in the area. .

Why green spaces create ideal conditions for pests

Hampstead and Belsize Park have something unique that you don’t see often across London…large gardens, parks and natural habitats. While this adds to the charm and draw of the area, it also creates perfect conditions for pests of all sorts.

Ponds, compost heaps, bird feeders and dense vegetation all provide food and shelter for rodents (rats and mice). And in quieter residential streets, pest activity often goes unnoticed until it reaches inside the home.

We have been seeing and increase in ongoing pest management across Hampstead and Belsize Park with regular inspections helping to identify early signs of activity before a problem escalates. At Mercury Pest Control, we work with both homeowners and businesses to ensure buildings are secured properly, to identify entry points and to overall reduce the likelihood of repeat infestations.

Moths and fabric pests in Hampstead homes

Fabric pests are another major issue in Hampstead and Belsize Park, particularly in larger homes with high-quality furnishings and textiles. This is where we commonly see wool carpets/rugs/curtains and wardrobes full of natural fibres. These materials are exactly what clothes moths and carpet beetles are attracted to, and we see themreturning often. We see that many infestations begin in rooms that are rarely used: spare bedrooms, dressing rooms or storage areas, so the larger the home with unused spaces, the higher the risk.

Often, homeowners only realise there’s a problem when they discover holes in clothing, rugs or carpets and by that point, moths may have been active for months. For example, carpet beetles are increasingly common in this area as they thrive in undisturbed spaces and can be found in carpets, fabrics and even behind furniture.

Early intervention is key when it comes to textile pests; the longer fabric pests are left untreated, the more damage they cause and the harder they are to eliminate long term.

Pest control for businesses and managed properties

Although Hampstead and Belsize Park are largely residential, there are still many commercial premises, cafés, offices and managed residential buildings that Mercury Pest Control serves. All across Hampstead High Street and Heath Street.

For these properties, pest control is rarely a one-off issue with shared waste areas, basements and service spaces mean that pests can move easily between units. This is why commercial clients in Hampstead increasingly choose preventative pest control contracts. These work as regular monitoring and maintenance which helps protect reputations, reduce disruption and prevent costly infestations.

Mercury Pest Control provides tailored pest management plans for residential and commercial properties across Hampstead and Belsize Park.
